Morning Tea: A Tradition Under Scrutiny for Health Concerns

New Delhi, AYT News | Recent discussions on health platforms like X have sparked a debate over the morning ritual of tea consumption, highlighting potential health risks associated with this widespread practice. While tea, particularly green tea, is celebrated for its health benefits, including antioxidant properties and potential cancer-fighting compounds, the timing of consumption might not always align with optimal health outcomes. Consuming tea, especially with high tannin content like black or green tea, first thing in the morning could interfere with nutrient absorption due to tannins' ability to bind with iron and other minerals. This interaction might lead to deficiencies over time, particularly in iron, which is crucial for preventing anemia.

The acidic nature of tea can increase stomach acidity, potentially leading to discomfort or exacerbating conditions like gastritis or acid reflux if consumed on an empty stomach. This could be particularly concerning for individuals with sensitive digestive systems. While tea generally contains less caffeine than coffee, it can still contribute to caffeine intake, which could lead to issues like anxiety, increased heart rate, or sleep disturbances if consumed in the morning by individuals sensitive to caffeine or those with caffeine intake limits.

Although tea contributes to daily fluid intake, its diuretic effect might mean that for some, particularly when consumed in large amounts, it could lead to dehydration if it replaces water consumption without adequate hydration afterward.
